The Albright College women's lacrosse team scored 10 unanswered goals in the Lions' home opener, defeating Richard Stockton College 14-5 on Saturday.
Albright also held the Ospreys scoreless for over 39 minutes as they turned an early 2-1 deficit into an 11-2 second half lead.
The Lions' defense caused 13 turnovers and held Stockton to just nine successful clears on 25 attempts, including a 5-of-16 success rate in the first half.
Sophomore
Brianna McCormick had a game-high five ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Amanda Smith forced three giveaways and picked up four ground balls, while
Sarah Nale (3 GBs) and
Erin Farrell (1 GB) each forced two turnovers.
Offensively, freshman
Giuliana Rizzotti totaled four goals, while fellow newcomers
Mariah Cullen (3G, 1A) and
Lexi Garapola (2G, 1A) also contributed.
Stockton led 2-1 after 3:40 played, but a nice backhand shot from Smith tied things up with 24:24 on the clock.
Smith fed Garapola for a man-up goal to take the lead with 14:23 remaining in the first half. Garapola then picked up a loose ball and found Cullen in front to make it 4-2.
Smith assisted a wide-open Farrell on the counterattack to make it 5-2, and the Lions led 8-2 at halftime following two Rizzotti goals.
Tori Meyer scored twice in just over two minutes in the second period, as Albright pushed its lead to 11-2.
Sophomore
Emily Hutson made four saves in goal for the Lions. Stockton's
Mary Stornes came off the bench and stopped eight of the 15 shots on target that she faced over 38:51 of action.
Albright improves to 2-2 on the season, handing first-year program Stockton (2-1) its first-ever varsity loss. The Lions host Immaculata on Tuesday.
