Potter Gets 100th Assist, Men's Lax Gets Revenge vs. Messiah

Box Score

The Albright College men's lacrosse team avenged its 13-8 loss to Messiah last season, beating the Falcons by the same scoreline in Shirk Stadium on Saturday.

Junior Philip Potter scored twice and recorded his 100th career assist, becoming the first Lion to reach the century mark in a scoring category. Classmate Mike Southwick had a hat trick, while Cam Cetrone, Matthew Lomady and Ryan Turner each had two goals as well.

Junior Darian Meador had an outstanding day at the faceoff dot, winning 19-of-23 while picking up 11 ground balls. Andrew Potter had seven ground balls, while Matt Wighard continued his recent solid play with an assist and two caused turnovers.

Potter's 100th assist came 2:01 into the game, on a pass behind the cage to T.J. Holston (his 99th career goal) for an early 2-0 Albright lead.

Derek Stump had a great pass across the goalmouth to fellow freshman Cetrone to open the scoring. A rip from Lomady with 9:17 on the clock made it 4-1 Albright to cap an early flurry.

Messiah battled back late in the period. The gap was cut to 4-3 after Will Franken's goal, with the Lions going 0-for-2 on first quarter man-up opportunities.

Messiah goalie T.J. Cole tipped A. Potter's shot off the bar early in the second quarter, but Andrew's brother Phil scored later on the possession for a 5-3 Albright lead.

Midway through the third, Albright had two players too many on the defensive end, leading to a 6-on-4 for Messiah that Andrew Harris capitalized on. Lomady had another hard rip two minutes before halftime to give the Lions an 8-4 lead at the break.

A pair of Southwick tallies in the third quarter put the Lions up 10-4. Turner ended the period by scoring from a tough angle after coming in from behind the goal.

Albright faced a 3-minute non-releasable penalty at the start of the fourth quarter for an illegal stick, but the Lions killed it off. Goalie Jordan DiZenzo saved Nate Nester, and A. Potter killed off significant time before beating his defender and earning a pushing penalty.

The Lions (5-4, 2-2) will host Lebanon Valley on Wednesday night in Shirk Stadium. Albright is 4-0 all-time vs. the Dutchmen, including Commonwealth (2012) and ECAC (2013) playoff victories, but all four games have been decided by four goals or less.
