Messiah Pulls Away from Albright Late in Second Half

READING, Pa. – Omari Ringgold scored a team-high 18 points, but David Fernandez-Bravo scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Messiah pulled away from Albright late in the second half on its way to a 77-67 Commonwealth Conference victory over the Lions on Saturday at the Bollman Center.

A layup by Fernandez-Bravo jump started a 7-0 Messiah run that pushed a 66-65 lead to 73-65 with 35 seconds remaining in the game.

DeJuan Smith cut the lead to 73-67 on a jumper with 25 seconds left, but Luke Cable and Fernandez-Bravo each added a pair of free throws in the final 17 seconds to seal the victory.

Fernandez-Bravo was 10-of-15 from the floor, including make a pair of three-point attempts, to lead Messiah to its second straight victory.

The Falcons (9-5, 2-4 Commonwealth) also received 18 points from Zac Hoy and 14 points from Cable.

Ringgold was 6-of-14 from the floor and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line to lead four players in double-figure scoring for Albright.

Albright (6-7, 2-3 Commonwealth) also received 12 points and 12 rebounds from Evan Ward. Gilberto Benz and Evan Dunn each scored 10 points for the Lions.

The Lions and Falcons were tied 40-40 at the intermission, but Albright shot just 34.5 percent from the field in the second half after shooting 50.0 percent in the first half.

Albright, which never led the in the second half, managed to draw even on a jumper by Ringgold with 6:37 to play in the second half.

But Cable gave the Falcons the lead for good when he drilled a three-pointer on the next possession giving Messiah a 62-59 lead with 6:18 remaining in the second half.

Albright raced out to a 20-9 lead in the first half behind six points from Benz and five points from Ringgold.

The Falcons fought their way back into the game and eventually forged a 40-40 halftime tie when Josh Clippinger scored inside with 32 seconds remaining in the first half.

Albright will return to action on Wednesday (Jan. 14) when it hosts Arcadia at 8 p.m. in the Bollman Center.
