Thomas Career-High Leads Albright Past Hood 68-60

FREDERICK, Md. -- Sophomore Shannon Thomas scored a career-high 22 points, including four points in the final 1:41 of regulation that helped the Albright women's basketball team pull away for a 68-60 Commonwealth Conference victory over Hood on Saturday at BB&T Arena.

After Verkia Smith cut the Albright lead to 59-58 with 2:03 to play, Thomas connected on a jumper that ignited an 8-0 run that extended the Lion lead to 67-58.

Jane Joyce and Jessica Venturelli added back-to-back baskets and Thomas capped the run with a pair of free throws that gave Albright a 67-58 lead with 17 seconds to play in the game.

Albright, which improved to 12-4 overall and 6-1 in the Commonwealth Conference, has won four straight and 10 of its last 12 games.

Thomas led four players in double figures by finishing the game 7-of-12 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from the three-point line, and 5-of-5 from the free-throw line.

Junior Kelecia Harris finished with 15 points and a game-high 17 rebounds to notch her 10th double-double of the season. Venturelli had 11 points and Joyce finished with 10 points for the Lions.

Hood, which dropped to 4-12 overall and 2-5 in conference play, was led by Rachel Wiley who had 18 points and 14 rebounds. Allie Appleby had 14 points and Rachel Kessler finished with 10 points for the Blazers.

Albright was outrebounded for only the fifth time all season (45-44), but limited Hood to just 34.3 percent shooting from the floor. The Lions also outscored the Blazers 19-8 from the foul line.

Hood led for much of the first half before Joyce hit back-to-back jumpers giving Albright a 20-17 lead with 6:39 to play in the first half.

The Blazers regained the lead at 27-26 on a layup by Wiley, but Venturelli put Albright back in front at 29-27 with a three-point play with 35 seconds left in the first period.

The Lions took a 30-29 lead into the intermission.

Hood took its second lead of the second half at 49-48 when Taylor McGaughey connected on a jumper with 7:03 to play in the game.

Albright regained the lead for good on a jumper by Devan Horka with 6:47 to play, which started a 9-0 run giving Albright a 57-49 lead.

A pair of free throws by Thomas gave Albright a 59-51 lead with 3:09 to play, but Hood used a 7-0 run to climb to within 59-58 with 2:03 left in the game.

Albright will return to action on Wednesday (Jan. 21) when it faces rival Alvernia at 6 p.m. at Jack McCloskey Court.
