READING, Pa. – Sophomore
Shannon Thomas hit a game-winning basket as time expired lifting the Albright women's basketball team to a 70-68 Commonwealth Conference victory over Alvernia on Wednesday on Jack McCloskey Court.
Kaitlyn Yoh tied the game for Alvernia when she converted a layup with six seconds remaining in regulation.
After an Albright timeout, the Lions worked the ball to Thomas who drove the lane and hit the game-winning basket sending Albright to its fifth-consecutive victory.
With the win, Albright extended a host of streaks. It marked the Lions fifth straight victory overall, their fifth consecutive conference win, their fifth straight road victory and their fifth consecutive win against Alvernia.
Junior
Kelecia Harris celebrated her birthday by scoring 28 points, which was one point shy of tying her career-high, and grabbing 11 rebounds. Harris posted her third consecutive double-double and her 11
th of the season.
Albright, which improved to 13-4 overall and 7-1 in the Commonwealth Conference, also received 12 points each from
Jessica Venturelli and
Emily O'Donnell.
Albright dominated the boards as it out-rebounded Alvernia 42-27 and also shot 47.7 percent from the floor for the game.
Alvernia, which dropped to 6-9 on the season and 2-6 in league play, was led by Yoh who scored 18 points. Tyra Roberts had 14 points, while Stevie Fortna scored 12 points and Mya Lobb finished with 11 points for the Crusaders.
Albright, which led the game for over 33 minutes, took a 34-29 lead into the half.
Back-to-back jumpers from Thomas and Harris pushed the Albright lead to 49-36 with 13:00 to play in the second half.
The Lions still led by nine points at 66-57 with 4:53 to play following a basket by
Kadijah Bishop, but the Crusaders would rally.
A three-pointer by Fortna and two free throws by Yoh cut the Albright lead to 66-62 with 3:35 to play.
Harris scored inside for Albright to increase the lead to 68-62 with 1:41 remaining, but Alvernia responded with a 6-0 run capped by the layup by Yoh tying the game at 68-68.
Albright resumes Commonwealth Conference play on Jan. 28 when it hosts Widener in the Bollman Center at 6 p.m.
