WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. –
Evan Ward scored a career-high 21 points, but Nykolas King scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds leading Lycoming to an 81-78 overtime victory over Albright on Wednesday in Lamade Gymnasium.
King scored four of his game-high 21 points in the overtime session and made two free throws with 7.1 seconds remaining in overtime to extend the Warriors lead to the final margin.
The Lions had a chance to tie, but
Omari Ringgold's three-point attempt was off the mark.
The loss by Albright ended a six-game winning streak at Lycoming as the Lions suffered their first defeat in Lamande Gymnasium since 2009.
Ward finished the game 7-of-14 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line to surpass his previous career high of 15 points. He also added eight rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
Albright, which dropped to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in the Commonwealth Conference, also received 16 points from
Gilberto Benz and 13 points from
DeJuan Smith.
Evan Dunn added five points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots for the Lions.
King was 4-of-9 from the field, but made 13-of-16 free-throw attempts to pace Lycoming. Chris Wallace scored 17 points and Malcolm Covington had 11 for the Warriors.
Lycoming, which improved to 8-5 overall and 4-1 in conference play, outscored Albright 26-16 from the foul line and forced the Lions into 25 turnovers.
Albright, which overcame a 12-point second-half deficit, forced the overtime when Ringgold made a pair of free throws with 2.1 seconds to play in regulation.
Lycoming scored the first four points of overtime before Benz cut the lead to 70-68 with a layup.
King pushed the Lycoming lead to 72-68, but Smith responded with a basket to trim the lead to 72-70 with 3:18 remaining.
A three-point play by Covington increased the Lycoming lead to 75-70 with 2:49 left in overtime.
Two free throws and a layup by Ward cut the margin to 75-74 with 1:52 remaining in the extra session.
Wallace made two free throws with 1:34 left to increase the lead to 77-74, but a basket by Benz brought Albright to within 77-76 at the 1:21 mark of overtime.
Alex Newbold answered with a basket for Lycoming to push the lead to 79-76, but Ringgold hit an off-balance jumper with 41 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 79-78.
Lycoming misfired on a three-point attempt on its next possession, but King grabbed the offensive rebound and made two free throws to clinch the victory.
Albright will return to action on Saturday (Jan. 10) when it hosts Messiah in a Commonwealth Conference game at 2 p.m. in the Bollman Center.
