READING, Pa. -- After battling to a scoreless tie through the first 45 minutes of action the Albright men's soccer team could not hold off Alvernia in the second half as the Crusaders scored three times to take a 3-0 MAC Commonwealth victory over the Lions on Wednesday.
Alvernia held a slight 5-4 advantage in shots during the first period, but the second period was a different story as the Crusaders held an 11-1 advantage in shots in the second stanza.
Nick Bombard scored a pair of goals, while Chris Guth also scored for Alvernia.
Steve Bien-Aime,
Austin Phillips,
Nathan Hughes and
Andrew Sussingham each notched shots for Albright and Bien-Aime was the only Lion able to muster a shot on goal.
Bombard broke the scoreless tie at the 53:56 mark of the second period when he took a cross from Austin Young and headed it past Albright keeper
Austin Aldinger for a 1-0 lead.
Bombard scored his second goal of the match just 3:40 later when he converted a cross to increase the lead to 2-0.
Guth capped the scoring when he tallied a goal at the 63:23 mark of the second period.
Aldinger made seven saves in net for Albright, while Zach Rider picked up the shutout victory for Alvernia.
Albright dropped to 1-11-1 overall and 0-4 in conference play, while Alvernia improved to 6-3-5 overall and 1-1-1 in MAC Commonwealth play.
The Lions return to action on Saturday (Oct. 17) when it hosts Lebanon Valley at 7 p.m. in Shirk Stadium.
