MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Junior
Sammi O'Connor pitched seven strong innings and also drove in a run as Albright opened the 2015 season with a 4-3 victory on Sunday.
O'Connor went 7.0 innings on the mound and allowed seven hits and one earned run while striking out eight batters to improve to 1-0 on the season. She also went 1-for-3 at the plate and drove in a run with a triple.
Kaela Romano went 1-for-3 with an RBI and
Armida Roman also drove in a run for the Lions.
Brianna Morris drove in a pair of runs for Salem, which dropped to 5-5-2 overall on the season.
Albright scored a run in its first at bat of the 2015 season.
Regina Milburn hit a one-out single, and following a strikeout, O'Connor tripled to plate Milburn and give Albright a 1-0 lead.
The Lions scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Zoe Robertson reached on a fielding error to begin the inning and
Brianne Long was hit by a pitch putting runners on first and second with no outs.
Milburn laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up one base and Romano plated Robertson with a single to increase the lead to 2-0.
Romano stole second and Long came in to score on the play when the catcher's throw sailed into left field.
Roman capped the run with an RBI single that scored Romano and increased the Albright lead to 4-0.
Salem scored a run in the fourth inning and two runs in the top of the sixth inning to climb to within 4-3.
O'Connor retired the Salem batters in order in the top of the seventh inning to seal the Albright victory.
