MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. –
Riley Gerenda pitched a one-hit shutout leading the Albright softball team to a 7-0 victory over Southern Vermont on Monday.
Gerenda, who was making her first career start, turned in a dominating performance for Albright. She tied the school record by striking out 14 batters and allowed only a leadoff single in the top of the seventh inning. She tied the school record of 14 strikeouts previously held by Ashley Young who struck out 14 Widener batters in 2005.
Brianne Long went 3-for-4 and scored three runs, while
Kaela Romano went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Albright offense.
Albright got all the offense it would need in the bottom of the first inning.
Long singled and advanced to second on a throwing error to opening the Albright first inning.
Regina Milburn followed with an RBI double to put Albright ahead 1-0.
One out later,
Sammi O'Connor doubled in Milburn to increase the Lions lead to 2-0.
Albright tacked on a run in the third inning when Long scored from third on a wild pitch after opening the inning with a single.
Long hit a one-out triple in the fifth inning and Romano brought her home with a single giving Albright a 4-0 lead.
Albright blew the game open by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Zoe Robertson and Romano had RBI's for the Lions in the decisive inning.
Meanwhile, Gerenda was dominating the Colonial batters. From the fourth through the sixth inning she struck out seven straight batters.
Albright improved to 2-0 on the season with the victory.
