MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Junior
Sammi O'Connor pitched a shutout and also drove in two runs leading the Albright softball team to a 6-0 victory over Rutgers-Newark on Monday.
The Lions, who improved to 3-0 on the season, recorded their second shutout victory of the day. Earlier in the day
Riley Gerenda pitched a one-hit shutout in a win over Southern Vermont and O'Connor matched her with a four-hit shutout.
O'Connor went the full seven innings and allowed just four hits and struck out seven batters to improve to 2-0 on the season.
O'Connor also helped herself at the plate by finishing the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in.
Albright banged out a season-high 13 hits on the day as O'Connor,
Regina Milburn,
Kaela Romano,
Sera Stull and
Morgan Cullen each had two hits.
O'Connor and Stull each drove in a pair of runs, while
Armida Roman and
Zoe Robertson added an RBI each.
Albright jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when
Brianne Long walked and later scored when O'Connor laced a double.
The Lions broke the game open in the third inning by scoring four runs.
Milburn and Romano opened the inning with back-to-back singles and O'Connor plated the first run with an RBI single giving the Lions a 2-0 lead.
After Roman drew a walk to load the bases, Stull lined a single that scored two runs pushing the Albright lead to 4-0.
Hannah Belair plated the fourth run of the inning on an RBI groundout to push the Albright lead to 5-0.
Albright added an insurance run in the sixth inning when Roman singled in Romano to extend the margin to 6-0.
