READING, Pa. – Senior
Mike Southwick scored four goals and Albright rallied for an 11-9 non-conference victory over Whittier on Tuesday at John Gurski Stadium.
The Lions fell behind 7-4 before Southwick and
T.J. Holston combined to score four goals during a decisive third period in which Albright outscored the Poets 6-1.
Albright, which extended its winning streak to four straight, improved to 5-1 on the season. Whittier dropped to 2-2 with the loss.
Albright senior
Darian Meador also turned in an outstanding performance as he won 16-of-21 faceoffs and picked up 11 ground balls. Meador was 6-for-6 in faceoffs in the decisive third period.
Senior
Nicholas Pisko turned aside nine shots in goal for Albright to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Foster Cunningham and Jonathan Kassity each scored three goals for Whittier.
Southwick staked Albright to an early 1-0 lead as he scored unassisted goal with 11:57 to play in the first period.
Whittier responded with a 4-0 run, keyed by a pair of goals from Kassity, to take a 4-1 lead with 5:31 remaining in the opening period.
Senior
Philip Potter cut the lead to 4-2 with a goal at the 3:03 mark of the opening stanza.
Dan Prevedel extended the Whittier lead to 5-2 with an unassisted goal with 13:38 to play in the second period.
Albright responded with back-to-back goals from Southwick and
Derek Stump to cut the lead to 5-4 with 4:45 left before halftime.
Kassity picked up his third goal of the game with 3:38 left in the second period giving Whittier a 6-4 advantage at the intermission.
Cunningham scored a man-down goal for the Poets with 13:35 left in the third period to stretch the Whittier lead to 7-4.
Ryan Turner jump started a 7-0 Albright run with a man-up goal at the 11:57 mark of the third period to bring the Lions to within 7-5.
Southwick made it 7-6 with an unassisted goal and Holston scored back-to-back goals giving Albright an 8-7 lead with 6:58 to play in the third.
Goals by
Matthew Lomady and Southwick gave Albright a 10-7 lead after three periods of play.
Turner then capped the run with a goal off an assist from
Andrew Potter with 7:16 to play, which gave Albright an 11-7 lead.
Whittier responded with goals from Cunningham and Matt Symes to trim the lead to 11-9 with 2:53 left in the contest.
Albright returns to action on Saturday (March 21) at 4 p.m. against Richard Stockton at John Gurski Stadium.
