Smith Tallies Hat Trick in Loss to Utica

MILLERSVILLE, Pa.Amanda Smith scored a team-high three goals, but Megan Kane and Courtney Wheeler combined to score eight goals leading Utica to a 12-8 victory over Albright in a non-conference game on Saturday at Biemesderfer Stadium.

Albright, which saw its four-game winning streak come to an end, also received two goals from Danielle Carey. Mariah Cullen, Rebecca Sartorio and Sydney Nankervis also each scored a goal for the Lions. The Lions record dropped to 6-2 with the loss.

Utica, which raised its record to 3-2 on the season, broke a 3-3 deadlock by scoring four consecutive goals at the end of the first half and over the first 11 minutes of the second period.

Kane and Rebecca Plunkett, who had two goals, opened the game with back-to-back goals giving Utica a 2-0 lead with 21:06 to play in the first period.

Carey got Albright on the board with a free-position goal with 20:20 left in the first.

Plunkett stretched the Utica lead to 3-1 on a goal with 14:49 remaining in the opening period, but Albright answered with back-to-back goals from Nankervis and Smith to tie the game with 6:31 left in the opening stanza.

Brooke Miller broke the tie and put Utica back in front at 4-3 with 2:17 to play before the intermission.

Utica opened the second half by scoring three straight goals to up the lead to 7-3 with 19:02 remaining in the game.

Carey ended the run for Utica with an unassisted goal that brought Albright to within 7-4 with 18:32 to play.

Wheeler and Kane then scored back-to-back goals for the Pioneers to up the lead to 9-4 at the 15:09 mark of the second period.

Cullen and Smith posted back-to-back goals for the Lions to get them back into the game at 9-6 with 7:31 left in the second.

Wheeler pushed the Utica lead to 10-6 on a free-position goal with 5:06 to play, which was answered by Smith who scored unassisted for Albright at the 4:56 mark.

After another goal by Wheeler, Sartorio found the back of the net to cut the Utica lead to 11-8 but Amanda Muldoon scored with eight seconds left to seal the victory.

Albright will return to action on Wednesday (March 25) when it opens Commonwealth Conference play at Widener.
