Farrell Scores Six to Lead Women's Lacrosse to an 11-9 Win at Widener

CHESTER, Pa. - Albright junior Erin Farrell scored six goals to lead the Albright women's lacrosse team to an 11-9 victory over Widener University, in the Commonwealth Conference opener for both schools, Wednesday night at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Amanda Smith scored four times for the Lions, who improved to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the Commonwealth with the victory. Caitlyn Mullner, Kelsey Powell and Meghan Garvey each scored two goals, for the Pride which fell to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Albright never trailed in the match, but could not gain more than a two goal advantage over Widener as the contest seesawed back and forth all night.

The match was tied at 6-6 early in the second half, when Farrell found the back of the net twice to make it an 8-6 edge for Albright with 23:17 remaining.

The Pride moved to within one at 8-7 on a Morgan Scott man-up goal with 18:29 to play, but Farrell gave the Lions a little breathing room with a goal at 17:49 to make it a 9-7 Albright lead.

After Widener cut the deficit to one at 9-8, Farrell notched her sixth of the game to put the Lions in front 10-8 at the 8:38 mark.

The Pride responded with 8:09 left to once again make a one goal contest 10-9, but Smith finished out the scoring with her fourth of the night with 7:20 to play.

Emily Hutson made two saves as the Lions kept the Pride off the board for the rest of the game, and finished with eight saves in the Albright goal to pick up the win. Widener keeper Megan Dunn stopped 11 Albright shots, but took the loss.

Smith opened the scoring with the first of her four goals on the night at the 28:10 mark. Farrell then made it 2-0 with a man-down goal with 25:25 to play in the first half.

Powell and Mullner tallied for Widener to even the match at 2-2 at the 19:37 mark.

Farrell made a 3-2 contest and Jacqui Montague added another to give the Lions a 4-2 lead with 13:40 remaining in the first half.

The Pride once again responded and tied the match at 4-4, Smith gave the Lions a 5-4 advantage, only to see Widener tie it on Garvey goal with 1:01 left in the half, and the teams went to the break with the game knotted 5-5.

Smith's tally at the 25:49 mark, from Danielle Carey, gave Albright a 6-5 lead, but Powell struck just 28 seconds later to square the game at 6-6 with 25:21 remaining.

The Lions host Stevenson University on Saturday at 1 p.m., with the game being played at Wilson High School, in a key early season Commonwealth match.
