Albright Women's Lacrosse Suffers First Conference Loss

READING, Pa. – Albright junior Amanda Smith scored three goals, but Stevenson outscored the Lions 5-1 in the second period on its way to a 10-6 Commonwealth Conference victory on Saturday at John Gurski Stadium.

The teams were deadlocked at 5-5 at halftime, but the Mustangs scored the first four goals of the second period to pull away.

Smith led Albright with three goals, while Erin Farrell, Mariah Cullen and Corinne Donohue each tallied one goal for the Lions. Danielle Carey and Meghan Wilson each added an assist for Albright.

Tori Wagner and Kathryn Merrick each scored three goals to lead Stevenson. Olivia Monteiro scored twice and Amanda LeGar and Carli Bafford each had one goal for the Mustangs. Wagner had a pair of helpers to finish with five points, while LeGar, Merrick and Jordan Porretto each added an assist.

Albright dropped to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in the Commonwealth, while Stevenson improved to 5-6 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.

Monteiro broke the 5-5 deadlock with a goal off of a feed from Wagner, which gave the Mustangs a 6-5 lead with 27:02 to play in the game.

Merrick scored on a free-position goal at the 19:32 mark of the second period, which upped the lead to 7-5.

LeGar pushed the lead to 8-5 with a goal on an assist from Wagner, and the Mustangs put the game away when Wagner scored on a pass from LeGar with 4:17 remaining increasing the lead to 9-5.

Erin Farrell scored for Albright with 27 seconds to play to cut the lead to 9-6, but Merrick won the draw control and scored with 18 seconds left in the game.

The first period was a back-and-forth affair as neither team held more than a two-goal lead.

Merrick got Stevenson on the board with 29:49 to play in the opening stanza on an unassisted goal.

Smith answered just 48 seconds later when she scored unassisted to knot the game at 1-1.

Wagner put the Mustangs back in front, but Cullen answered for the Lions to tie the game at 2-2 with 11:02 to play in the first period.

Wagner and Bafford scored back-to-back goals giving Stevenson a 4-2 lead with 6:59 remaining in the opening period.

Donohue and Smith responded with back-to-back goals for the Lions, which tied the game at 4-4 at the 5:36 mark of the first.

Monteiro to regain the lead for the Mustangs, but Smith tallied her third goal of the first period with 1:30 to play to send the teams into the half tied at 5-5.

Albright will return to action on Wednesday (April 1) when it visits Arcadia in a Commonwealth Conference game beginning at 7 p.m.
