ANNVILLE, Pa. - The Albright baseball team scored three times in the sixth inning, but could not overcome a six-run deficit in falling 6-3 to Lebanon Valley in Commonwealth Conference action on a cold, wet Wednesday afternoon at McGill Field.
The Lions fell to 3-5 overall with a 1-3 mark in the Commonwealth, while the Dutchmen improved to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Albright trailed 6-0 when it rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth inning off reliever Corey Sell, who had replaced starter Casey Wall in the fifth. Wall went the first 4.0 innings without allowing a run on two hits.
The Lions opened the sixth with consecutive singles from
Gabe Santone and
Zac Okonski with one out,
Evan High singled to load the bases and
Julian Cimino plated the first Albright run with a sacrifice fly to score Santone.
Brandon Triantos walked to once again load the bases and the Lions cut the deficit to three, when
Max Dundore reached on an error that scored Okonski and High to make it a 6-3 ballgame.
Patrick Reagan replaced Sell, and induced
John Medvecky to line out to center to end the Lions threat.
Sell, who allowed one earned run in 1.2 innings, was credited with the win to improve to 1-1 on the year. Reagan finished the game pitching 3.1 innings and giving up only one hit for his first save of the season.
The Dutchmen jumped on Albright senior starter
Alex Myers for two runs in the bottom of the first, on a two run single by Brett Fundell.
Lebanon Valley broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, knocking Meyer out in the process. Meyer, who saw his record drop to 1-1 with the loss, allowed six earned runs in 3.1 innings of work, with three strikeouts.
The Dutchmen loaded the bases to start the fourth, Meyer then recorded a strikeout, but Zac Edwards singled to make it a 3-0 game, and Zack Smith followed with a two run single to end the day for Meyer and increase the lead to 5-0.
Doug Franks came on in relief for the Lions and surrendered a two-out single to Phil Dohner which pushed the Lebanon Valley advantage to 6-0.
Franks pitched 2.2 innings giving up only one hit, and
Mat Costa struck out three in 2.0 innings of relief for the Lions.
The Lions are back in action on Friday when they travel to Fredericksburg, Md. to take on Hood College in a Commonwealth Conference game with the first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
