CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior
Bryan Smith scored a pair of goals, but eighth-ranked SUNY Cortland posted a 10-6 victory over Albright on Wednesday in non-conference action at Stadium Red.
The Red Dragons raced out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter, which proved to be the difference in the game.
Albright, which dropped to 1-1 on the season, also received goals from
Andrew Potter,
Derek Stump,
Matthew Lomady and
James Egleston. For Stump, Lomady and Egleston it marked their first goals of the 2015 season.
T.J. Holston and
Philip Potter each had two assists for Albright.
Zach Hopps and James Stavrakis each had three goals to lead Cortland, which improved to 1-1 on the season. Luke McNaney added two goals, while Matt Rakoczy had a goal and two assists.
Cortland wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Hopps gave the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead with 13:33 to play in the first quarter.
Mike Cantelli scored an unassisted goal to make it 2-0 and Stavrakis scored back-to-back goals to extend the lead to 4-0 with 6:03 to play in the opening quarter.
Smith got Albright on the board with 2:49 to play in the first when he scored an unassisted goal.
Hopps second goal of the game, at the 13:43 mark of the second quarter, pushed the Cortland lead to 5-1 but Smith answered with his second goal off a feed from Holston to trim the margin to 5-2.
McNaney gave Cortland a 6-2 lead at the intermission when he scored 26 seconds before halftime.
Stavrakis made it 7-2 Cortland on his third goal of the game with 8:21 to play in the third quarter.
Lomady cut the lead to 7-3 when he tallied an unassisted goal with 1:51 left in the third, but Cortland responded with two goals in eight seconds to open the fourth quarter to take a 9-3 lead.
Egleston notched his first goal of the season off a pass from
Philip Potter to cut the lead to 9-4, but McNaney answered for Cortland to increase the lead to 10-4 with 6:25 to play.
Stump scored an even-strength goal on a feed from Holston and
Andrew Potter capped the scoring with a goal with 20 seconds remaining in the game.
Albright will return to action on Saturday (March 7) when it hosts SUNY Potsdam at 4 p.m. at Marywood University in Scranton, Pa.
