Philip Potter Leads Albright to 13-12 Victory over SUNY Potsdam

SCRANTON, Pa. – Senior Philip Potter scored four goals, including three in a decisive second quarter, and also added two assists leading the Albright men's lacrosse team to a 13-12 non-conference victory over SUNY Potsdam on Saturday at Pacer Field on the campus of Marywood University.

Led by Potter, the Lions raced out to a 9-3 halftime advantage and then held off a late charge by the Bears to secure their second win of the season.

Ryan Turner gave Albright a 2-0 lead with back-to-back goals just 1:16 into the game.

Jon Woodworth cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal for SUNY Potsdam, but James Egleston and T.J. Holston responded with goals for Albright to increase the lead to 4-1 with 4:42 to play in the first quarter.

Eric Soderquist and Woodworth brought the Bears to within 4-3, but the Lions responded with six consecutive goals.

Mike Southwick gave Albright a 5-3 lead on an even-strength goal and Potter scored back-to-back goals to up the lead to 7-3 with 11:31 left in the second quarter.

Cam Cetrone scored on an assist from Bryan Smith and Potter closed out the second quarter with his third goal to give the Lions a 9-3 lead at the break.

Turner then scored to cap the run and give Albright a 10-3 lead.

Nick Orsini of SUNY Potsdam and Albright's Derek Stump exchanged goals before the Bears rallied back into the game.

Matt Kennedy scored to start a 5-0 run by SUNY Potsdam that closed the gap to 11-9 with 12:16 to play in the fourth quarter.

Andrew Potter ended the run with a goal for the Lions that increased the lead to 12-9 with 9:13 left to play.

Kennedy answered with a goal to trim the lead to 12-10, but Philip Potter scored his fourth goal to up the margin to 13-10 with 5:49 left in the contest.

Brian Martin scored an unassisted goal to bring the Bears to within 13-11 with 5:34 left to play and a goal by Ed Doherty cut the lead to 13-12 with 3:54 left.

The Bears got off two more shots in the final 3:54, including one that hit the post, but the Lions escaped with the victory.

Albright improved to 2-1 on the season with the win, while SUNY Potsdam fell to 0-1.

Turner finished with three goals for Albright, while Holston, Egleston, Andrew Potter, Stump, Southwick and Cetrone each had one goal for the Lions.

Nicholas Pisko made eight saves in goal for Albright and picked up the victory to raise his record to 2-1.

Soderquist, Woodworth, Doherty and Kennedy each had a pair of goals for SUNY Potsdam.
