LANCASTER, Pa. – Junior
Amanda Smith notched a season-high six goals, but Buffalo State got overtime goals from Sarah Lorusso and Alanna Herne to defeat Albright 18-16 on Friday at the Spooky Nook Indoor Complex.
The two overtime goals for the Bengals capped a second-half rally that saw Buffalo State overcome a six-goal deficit.
Lorusso scored with 3:07 to play in overtime giving Buffalo State a 17-16 lead, and Herne added a goal with 1:50 to play that helped to clinch the victory.
It offset an outstanding effort by Smith who poured in six goals, which was just one shy of tying her career high for goals in a game.
Albright also was denied the opportunity to tie the school record for the best start in school history, and dropped to 2-1 on the season.
The Lions also received three goals and two assists from
Danielle Carey, while
Erin Farrell and
Meghan Wilson each had a pair of goals.
Jacqui Montague,
Mariah Cullen and
Tori Meyer also added goals for Albright.
Emily Hutson went the distance in goal for the Lions and made 10 saves.
Lorusso and Herne did most of the damage for Buffalo State as each player scored six goals.
Elyse Stark picked up the victory in goal for the Bengals as she made 16 saves.
Smith scored five first-half goals and the Lions held an 11-6 lead at intermission.
Smith gave Albright a 12-6 lead with 27:48 to play in the game on a free-position goal.
Buffalo State, which improved to 1-0 on the season, answered with back-to-back goals from Lorusso to trim the lead to 12-8 with 22:48 left in the second half.
Carey responded with a free-position goal for the Lions, which increased the lead to 13-8 with 21:05 left in the game.
The Bengals cut the lead to 13-10 on goals from Rebecca Galanti and Alexis Wilensky, but Albright answered with goals from Montague and Carey to up the lead to 15-10 with 13:43 left in the contest.
Buffalo State then ripped off a 5-0 run, sparked by three consecutive goals by Herne, to tie the score at 15-15 with 4:44 to play.
Carey regained the lead for Albright with a free-position goal with 3:35 left in the game, but Herne tied the contest with 1:56 to play on an unassisted goal.
Cullen won the draw control for Albright following the tying goal giving the Lions a final opportunity to win the game in regulation. Farrell fired a shot that was wide of the net with 1:17 to play and Stark made a save on a shot by Smith just before the final horn.
Albright will return to action on March 10 when it visits Immaculata for a non-conference game beginning at 4 p.m.
