CHESTER, Pa. –
Nathan Fretz and
Evan High each had three hits, but Albright could not hold off a late Widener rally as the Pride defeated the Lions 10-6 in a Commonwealth Conference game on Monday.
Fretz was 3-for-5 and scored a pair of runs, while High was 3-for-5 with a run scored and a run batted in to lead Albright.
Albright took a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Widener scored three times in the seventh and added three more in the bottom of the eighth inning to clinch the win.
Albright dropped to 11-10-1 on the season and 7-8 in Commonwealth play, while Widener improved to 14-11 overall and 8-5 in conference.
Zac Okonski was 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Lions and
Dylan Boll blasted his third home run of the season. Albright also received base hits from
John Medvecky and
Max Dundore.
Widener was led by John Petrongolo who was 3-for-5, scored three runs and knocked in three. Matt Scherer was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Michael Rytelewski went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
Kevin Scisorek picked up the win in relief for Widener, while
Aaron Forker took the loss for the Lions.
Widener took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning highlighted by a bases-loaded single that plated three runs.
The Lions cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth inning.
Boll led off the inning with his third home run of the season that cut the Widener lead to 4-1. With one out, High singled through the left side and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Okonski delivered a two-out single to right that scored High and trimmed the margin to 4-2.
The Lions tacked on another run in the top of the fifth inning.
With one out, Fretz singled to right and Medvecky followed with a double that scored Fretz to bring the Lions to within 4-3.
Zach Krause held the Pride at bay during the Lions comeback. He entered the game in the bottom of the third inning and pitched 3.1 innings and did not allow a run.
Albright took the lead with a three-run top of the seventh inning.
Fretz doubled to center to lead off the inning and Medvecky was hit by a pitch to place runners on first and second with no outs. Albright loaded the bases when Boll reached on a fielder's choice bunt.
Gabe Santone delivered a sacrifice fly to center that scored Fretz to tie the game at 4-4.
High followed with a single to left that scored Medvecky and put the Lions in front for the first time in the game at 5-4.
Okonski plated the final run of the inning with a two-out single that scored Boll and increased the Lion lead to 6-4.
Widener took advantage of Albright fielding miscues to regain the lead by scoring three times in the bottom of the seventh inning, and then added to the lead with three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Albright will next host Susquehanna in a non-conference game on Tuesday (April 14) at 4 p.m. at Kelchner Field.
