Albright Drops Series Opener to Alvernia

READING, Pa. – John Medvecky went 2-for-4 and drove in a run and Brandon Triantos was 3-for-3, but Zach Nadolny homered and drove in five runs leading Alvernia to a 10-1 Commonwealth Conference victory over Albright on Friday at Kelchner Field.

Alvernia, which ran its winning streak to 10 straight, improved to 24-8 overall and 13-3 in the Commonwealth Conference. Albright dropped to 11-12-1 overall and 7-9 in league play.

Albright banged out 11 hits on the day led by Traintos and Medvecky. Gabe Santone finished the game 2-for-4 and Nathan Fretz and Evan High each added a base hit for the Lions.

Alex Myers took the loss for Albright despite pitching into the sixth inning. He permitted six earned runs and struck out two in five innings of work.

Alvernia had 14 hits, including three extra-base hits, in the victory. Ben Sawyer was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI and Cameron Coons and Mike Cunningham each had two hits for the Crusaders.

Ryan Sheekey went 7.0 innings and allowed eight hits and struck out three to improve to 6-2 on the season.

Alvernia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Cunningham singled home Sawyer who led off the inning with a single.

The Crusaders upped the lead to 3-0 when Nadolny hit a two-run homer to centerfield.

Albright countered with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Daniel Louviaux led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second base when Triantos reached on a bunt single. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Fretz, and Medvecky delivered the Lions only run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center.

Alvernia then took control of the game by scoring five times in the top of the sixth inning to increase the lead to 9-1. The Crusaders tacked on a run in the top of the ninth inning.

The two teams will conclude the three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday (April 18) beginning at 12 p.m. at Alvernia.
