READING, Pa. – Sophomore
Nathan Fretz had three hits and drove in two runs, but Alvernia swept a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader from Albright on Saturday at Angelica Park.
The Crusaders won the opener 16-2 and completed the sweep with a 5-4 victory in game two.
Fretz was 2-for-3 in game one and was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI in game two.
Albright held a late lead in the second game before Alvernia rallied to claim the victory.
The Crusaders took an early 3-0 lead before the Lions began chipping away at the lead.
Dylan Boll blasted his fourth home run of the season leading off the fourth inning to cut the Alvernia lead to 3-1.
The Lions took the lead with a three-run fifth inning.
John Medvecky led off the inning with a single to left and advanced to third when
Brandon Triantos reached on an Alvernia fielding error.
Fretz then delivered a two-run triple that scored Medvecky and Triantos and he gave the Lions a 4-3 lead when he scored on an Alvernia throwing error.
The Crusaders tied the game at 4-4 with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning and completed the rally by scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a wild pitch.
Alvernia raced out to an 8-0 lead in game one before the Lions got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Boll led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a single by
Evan High and an Alvernia error.
Joe Pechulis delivered both runners when he singled to right to cut the margin to 8-2.
The Crusaders then blew the game open by plating eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Albright returns to action on Sunday (April 19) when it hosts Gwynedd-Mercy for senior day.
