READING, Pa. -- The Albright women's soccer team erupted for four second-period goals and cruised to a 5-1 victory over Penn State Altoona on Saturday at Shirk Stadium.
The Lions found themselves deadlocked at 1-1 at halftime, but converted 10 second-period shots into four goals to pull away from Penn State Altoona.
Albright posted its highest scoring output since defeating Penn College 8-0 on Sept. 22, 2011, and also halted a two-match losing streak in the process.
Albright, which improved to 2-2 on the season, received goals from
Suzanne Kuhrmann,
Megan O'Brien,
Rebecca Mallon,
Natalie Wilson and
Emily Diaz.
Penn State Altoona, which fell to 0-3 on the year, opened the scoring at the 21:07 mark of the first period when Emily Casey scored off an assist by Sherry Moore.
Albright tied the score on a nifty goal by Kuhrmann who beat her defender one-on-one and chipped the ball past the keeper to tie the game at 1-1.
The Lions wasted little time in taking the lead for good in the second period. O'Brien headed in a ball on a corner kick from
Dylan Shipe just 49 seconds into the second period to put Albright ahead to stay at 2-1.
Mallon scored on a penalty kick after
Rebecca Sartorio was tackled in the box on a breakaway attempt, which increased the lead to 3-1.
Wilson made it 4-1 Albright when she lifted a ball past the keeper off a cross from Kuhrmann.
Diaz finished the scoring for the Lions when she settled a corner kick and beat the keeper to the outside at the 85:15 mark of the match.
Christine Allison picked up the victory for Albright in net as she made three saves.
Payton Bogatch played the final 13:32 in net for the Lions.
Albright returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 13) when it hosts Susquehanna in a non-conference match at 1 p.m. in Shirk Stadium.
