READING, Pa. -- Sophomore
Maddy Greth had seven kills and four service aces, but the Albright volleyball team lost to Stevenson 25-10, 25-14, 25-22 in its MAC Commonwealth home opener on Tuesday in the Bollman Center.
Freshman
Victoria Wainwright added five kills and three blocks for the Lions, while freshman
Katie Schmerse had four kills, four digs and three blocks.
Stevenson, the defending conference champion, was led by Lauren Weaver and Kristen Brooks who each had eight kills. Brooks posted a .615 attack percentage to go along with a team-high six digs, while Weaver finished with a .538 attack percentage. Setter Sara Bollinger had 20 assists and three digs.
The Mustangs, who improved to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in the MAC Commonwealth, had 13 service aces for the match led by Dahila Duncan and Deanna Bradbury who had three each.
Albright, which dropped to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play, was limited to a -.025 attack percentage while the Mustangs hit .297 for the match.
Stevenson raced out to a 13-2 lead in the first set and coasted to a 25-10 win.
The second set was deadlocked at 13-13 before the Mustangs reeled off a 12-1 run to claim a 25-14 victory. Megan Hren served 11 consecutive points for the Mustangs and Brooks had four kills during the run.
The Lions dug out of an early 3-0 hole in the third set to tie the score at 9-9 on a kill by
Sarah Clark. Albright took a 12-9 lead when Greth recorded three consecutive service aces.
Albright held a 17-14 lead before the Mustangs battled back. Two Albright attack errors and a kill by Jackie Zeppa knotted the set at 17-17.
Back-to-back kills by Wainwright regained the lead for Albright at 19-17. After an Albright attack error gave Stevenson a 21-20 lead, Schmerse and Wainwright combined on a block to tie the set at 21-21.
Stevenson used a 3-0 run to take control of the set and finished off the Lions on an Albright attack error.
The Lions return to action on Wednesday (Sept. 16) when it faces Dickinson in a non-conference match at 7 p.m.
