READING, Pa. – Junior
Shannon Thomas poured in 20 points leading the Albright women's basketball team to a 66-59 MAC Commonwealth victory over Lebanon Valley on Monday in the Bollman Center.
Sophomore guard
Jane Joyce added 12 points and a team-high six assists for the Lions, while senior
Kelecia Harris grabbed 14 rebounds, which marked her 49th career double-figure rebounding game.
Thomas shot 8-for-17 from the field and recorded five assists to pace the Albright offense.
A strong second half by Albright lifted the Lions to their fifth home win of the season as they improved to 16-2 overall and remain in first place in the MAC Commonwealth with an 8-1 record.
With the victory, the Lions extended their current winning streak to four straight.
Lebanon Valley dropped to 11-7 overall and 5-4 in conference play with the loss. Peyton Carper lead the Dutchmen with 25 points, while Bridget Rothert and Lexie Lantz each scored 10 points.
Albright has dominated teams in the third quarter all season long and that trend continued on Monday as the Lions used a big run to pull away from the Dutchmen.
After Rothert tied the game 35-35 with a layup, Albright responded with an 11-0 run to seize control of the contest.
Joyce started the run with a jumper and two free throws by
Alysha Lofton upped the lead to 39-35 with 4:57 to play in the quarter.
Thomas hit a jumper and
Nina Mazzarelli followed with a jumper to extend the Lions lead to 43-35 with 3:30 remaining in the third quarter.
Joyce connected on a free throw and Mazzarelli capped the outburst with a jumper giving Albright a 46-35 lead with 2:14 to play in the quarter.
Taylor Umbrell ended the run with a free throw, but Thomas connected on a jumper just before the horn giving Albright a 48-36 lead after three quarters.
Lebanon Valley rallied to within 48-42 with a 6-0 run, but Albright responded with an 8-0 run, which featured six points from
Emily O'Donnell, to extend the lead to 56-42 with 5:59 to play in the game.
The Dutchmen climbed to within 61-55 on a three-pointer by Carper with 2:26 to play, but Joyce knocked down a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 63-55 with 1:36 left in the game.
LVC got back-to-back baskets by Carper and Umbrell to trim the lead to 63-59 with 50 seconds left in the game.
The Lions, who struggled from the free throw line all night, made 3-of-6 down the stretch to ice the game.
Albright limited Lebanon Valley to just 33.9 percent shooting, while the Lions shot 47.3 percent from the floor. Albright also owned a 47-33 rebounding advantage.
Albright will return to action on Wednesday (Jan. 27) when it visits Widener for a 6 p.m. MAC Commonwealth game.
