READING, Pa. – The Albright field hockey team got a dramatic, last-gasp goal to send its match with Alvernia into overtime on Thursday night, but the Crusaders scored just over five minutes into the overtime period to escape Shirk Stadium with a 4-3 victory.
Alvernia broke a 2-2 halftime tie with a goal in the 45
th minute by Alexis Krall off a penalty corner. The score stayed 3-2 until time expired. Even with 0:00 on the clock, however, the Lions had an untimed last chance as it controlled the ball on a penalty corner. The first attempt led to a second one, and on that one, an Albright shot hit the post. That led to a scramble in front of the net, and
Annette Helmandollar stuffed the ball in past keeper Rebecca Brosious to tie the score at 3-3.
In overtime, Alvernia got the winner with 9:12 remaining in the period off a penalty corner of its own. Margaret Wentzel scored her second goal of the game when she carried it in and beat goalie
Aileen Taylor for the winner.
Albright took the lead just over three minutes into play when
Amanda Long scored after carrying it in and beating Brosious. After Alvernia tied the score in the 12
th minute,
Tracy Snyder scored off a penalty corner from
Kendra Delgado to make it 2-1 in the 28
th minute. Just over a minute later, however, Alvernia again tied the score at 2-2.
Snyder led the Lions with eight shots. Long and
Kaley Donmoyer each had five shots. Prior to the match, the Lions honored Delgado in its senior night festivities. She's the lone senior on the team.
