Late Shot Stops Women’s Hoops in Puerto Rico

TRUJILLO ALTO, P.R. – Nina Mazzarelli scored eight of her game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter, but a late three-pointer gave Denison a 51-48 victory over the Lions in the final game of the team's Puerto Rico tour. Devan Horka chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds.

The Lions trailed by five, 45-40, with 3:29 to play after a Denison three pointer by Alison Shafer. MiKayla Lea cut it to three on the next possession with a basket, and Mazzarelli hit a three pointer with 1:51 left to tie the score at 45.

Shafer hit another three with 1:33 left to make it 48-45 Denison, but the Lions again fought back. Mazzarelli hit two free throws to make it 48-47 with 57 seconds left. The Albright defense forced a turnover on Denison's next possession, and Mazzarelli tied the score at 48 with another make at the free throw line.

The score stayed at 48-48 until the final possession of the game. Denison managed to steal the ball, and Shafer once again made a three pointer on the final possession of the game to hand the Lions a tough 51-48 defeat.

Albright took a 16-11 lead after one quarter. Mazzarelli hit a three and Lea added a jumper in the final minute to push the lead to five points. Lea finished with six points and five rebounds. Mazzarelli had three of the Lions' four three pointers.

Denison held the Lions to just seven points in the second quarter as the teams went into the intermission tied, 23-23. Denison led by three points after three quarters and led by as many as nine in the fourth quarter before the Lions used a 7-0 run to pull back into the game. Shannon Thomas hit a three to jump-start that run. She finished with seven points.

Albright returns to action at home against Hood in conference action on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
