DOVER, Del. –
Armida Roman had five hits and drove in a run and
Stephanie Pomante drove in three runs leading the Albright softball team to a split of its season-opening doubleheader against Wesley on Saturday at Dupont Field.
The Lions won the first game 10-6 before Wesley claimed the second game, which was halted after six innings due to darkness, by a score of 3-2.
Albright got the season off to a great start as the Lions scored three times in the first inning of game one.
Brianne Long and
Stephany Courtney drew walks to lead off the game and Roman doubled to center scoring Long and giving the Lions a 1-0 lead.
Sammi O'Connor drew a walk and Pomante also walked to force in Courtney to increase the lead to 2-0.
The Lions scored their final run of the inning when Roman scored on an illegal pitch.
After Wesley scored a run in the bottom of the first, Albright tacked on three more runs in the second inning.
Courtney scored Long with an RBI groundout to increase the lead to 4-1 and Pomante tripled to center to score O'Connor with the second run of the inning.
Albright's final run of the second frame came when
Madison Bear drew a bases-loaded walk to score Pomante.
The Albright bats continued their assault in the third inning by scoring three more times. Long scored on a wild pitch, Pomante forced in a run with a bases-loaded walk and
Regina Milburn hit a sacrifice fly to center to up the lead to 9-1.
Wesley scored five times in the bottom of the third inning, but the Lions tacked on a run in the top of the fifth inning when Long walked with the bases loaded to force in Milburn to push the lead to 10-6.
Albright got off to a fast start in the second game with a pair of runs in the first inning.
With two outs, Roman singled and O'Connor followed with a walk to put two runners on base.
Both runners moved up a base on a passed ball and Milburn staked the Lions to an early 2-0 lead when she ripped a single to center scoring both Roman and O'Connor.
Wesley answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
Samantha Burns walked to lead off the inning, and one batter later Nina Marcano tripled to left to score Burns. Ashley Royer followed with a single that plated Marcano and tied the score at 2-2.
The game remained deadlocked until the fifth inning when the Wolverines took the lead.
Burns reached on an infield single and advanced to second on an Albright error. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Breanna Hartman and came in to score on a double by Ashley Royer.
The game was halted after the sixth inning due to darkness.
Albright returns to action on Thursday (March 3) when it hosts Messiah in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
