NORFOLK, Va. -- Senior
Amanda Smith tied her career high with seven goals and Albright crusided to a 22-11 victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday at Birdsong Field.
Smith, who also had seven goals against Colorado College in 2014, scored four first-half goals and tallied three more in the second half. She also established a new career high for points as she had a first-half assist to finish the night with eight points.
Mariah Cullen also notched a career-high as she poured in six goals and she tied her career high with seven points as she also had an assist.
Albright, which improved to 4-2 on the season, also received four goals from
Erin Farrell, while
Danielle Carey and
Sophie Bass each had two goals and
Jacqui Montague finished with one goal.
The Lions, who were limited to four goals in their previous game, took out their frustrations on the Marlins as they posted their highest single-game scoring performance since also scoring 22 goals against Misericordia in 2013.
Smith, Farrell and Cullen opened the scoring for Albright with unassisted goals in the first 3:19 of the game.
After Cullen gave Albright a 4-1 lead with an unassisted goal at the 24:34 mark of the first, the Marlins responded with a 3-0 run to tie the game at 4-4 with 22:54 remaining in the first half.
The Lions regained the lead on an unassisted goal by Cullen, but Abby Shope tied the game at 5-5 at the 20:42 mark.
Albright then seized control of the contest with an 8-0 run.
Smith scored three goals during the run, while Cullen and Farrell each had two goals to give Albright a 13-5 lead with 8:52 to play before halftime.
Virginia Weslyan responded with a 3-1 run to cut the lead to 14-8, but Montague scored with 1:25 left in the first giving the Lions a 15-8 lead at the break.
After back-to-back goals by the Marlins trimmed the lead to 16-10, Albright closed the game with a 6-1 run to claim the victory. Smith tallied three goals during the run to spark the Lions.
Albright returns to action on Saturday (March 19) when it faces Merrimack in Hilton Head, S.C. at 10 a.m.
