MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. --
Riley Gerenda pitched her third consecutive shutout and
Stephanie Pomante had two hits and drove in two runs leading Albright to an 8-0 victory over SUNY New Paltz and a split of its final two games at the Fastpitch Dreams Tournament at the North Myrtle Beach Complex on Friday.
Albright opened the day with a 3-2 loss to Wisconsin-Stout, but finished on a high note with the shutout victory over New Paltz. The Lions won their first eight games in tournament play and finished the tournament with a 9-2 record.
Gerenda, who had blanked Spalding and Sarah Lawrence in her previous two starts, limited SUNY New Paltz to just four hits and struck out one in raising her record to 5-1 on the season.
Pomante was 2-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI to pace the Albright offense, while
Corinne Garuffe also drove in two runs.
Armida Roman was 2-for-3 and scored two runs and
Stephany Courtney was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while
Brianne Long,
Regina Milburn and Garuffe each had one hit.
Albright, which improved to 10-3 on the season, broke through with three runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Pomante got things started with a one-out single and advanced to second when Courtney followed with a single to center. Garuffe then tripled to left to score Pomante and Courtney and give the Lions a 2-0 lead.
Madison Bear lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score Garuffe and increase the lead to 3-0.
The Lions extended the lead with three more runs in the third inning.
Long and Roman hit back-to-back singles to open the inning and O'Connor reached base when her sacrifice bunt was throw away allowing Long to come in to score.
Milburn ripped a double to left center that brought home Roman to up the Albright lead to 5-0. Pomante capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to center giving the Lions a 6-0 lead.
Albright tacked on two runs in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Pomante and Milburn scored from third on a wild pitch.
Wisconsin-Stout used a three-run fifth inning to rally past the Lions in the first game of the day.
Albright took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Sera Stull walked to lead off the frame and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Madison Bear.
Kelly Cembrale doubled to left to score Stull and put the Lions in front 1-0.
Roman hit a two-out single to right that brought home Cembrale and upped the Lions lead to 2-0.
The Blue Devils then pushed across three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take the lead for good.
Sammi O'Connor took the loss for Albright despite allowing just five hits and two earned runs. The senior recorded her fifth double-figure strikeout game of the season as she finished with 12 strikeouts.
Pomante and Roman each had two hits for the Lions, while Cembrale, Courtney, Stull and Bear each had one hit.
Albright returns to action on Monday (March 21) when it hosts Penn State Berks for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. at the Albright Softball Complex.
