Lions Sweep Penn State Berks

READING, Pa. -- Kelly Cembrale drove in the winning run with a double in the fifth inning of game one and Riley Gerenda pitched a shutout in the second game leading Albright to a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Berks on Tuesday at the Albright Softball Field.

Albright won game one 3-2 and then posted an 8-0 victory in the second game to improve to 12-3 on the season.

Albright trailed 2-0 in game one before rallying to post the victory.

Regina Milburn got things started for the Lions in the bottom of the fifth inning with a single. With one out, Stephany Courtney singled to right advancing Milburn to second base. Milburn was forced out at third base when Corinne Garuffe hit into a fielder's choice, but Madison Bear delivered a game-tying double to left center that scored Courtney and Garuffe and knotted the score at 2-2.

Cembrale capped the rally by doubling down the rightfield line to score Bear and put Albright ahead for the first time in the game at 3-2.

Starting pitcher Sammi O'Connor then made the lead stand up as she worked a scoreless sixth and seventh innings to secure the win for the Lions. O'Connor allowed seven hits and just one earned run in 7.0 innings and tied her season high with 13 strikeouts. She improved to 6-2 on the season with the win.

Cembrale, Armida Roman, Milburn, Courtney and Bear all collected hits for the Lions in the game one victory.

Gerenda allowed just four hits and struck out two batters to lead the Lions to an 8-0 win in game two. She notched her fourth shutout of the season and raised her record to 6-1 on the year with the win.

O'Connor led the Albright offense in game two by driving in a pair of runs, while Roman and Bear each collected two hits. Albright also got base hits from Cembrale, Brianne Long, Courtney and Jordan Chell in the second game.

Albright jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game two.

Cembrale singled to left center to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a fielding error. Roman reached on an infield single, which advanced Cembrale to third with one out. O'Connor then delivered the first run of the contest when she produced an RBI groundout that brought home Cembrale.

The Lions busted the game open in the fourth inning by scoring seven runs.

Courtney led off the inning with a single and advanced to second one out later when Bear singled to center. Courtney scored on a Penn State Berks fielding error to push the lead to 2-0.

Long singled off the pitcher's leg, which brought home Bear and increased the Albright lead to 3-0. Roman followed with a single to center that scored Cembrale and upped the lead to 4-0 in favor of the Lions.

O'Connor then delivered a single to right that scored Long, and Stephanie Pomante and Courtney also added RBI to cap the seven-run outburst.

Penn State Berks fell to 6-3 overall with the two losses.
