READING, Pa. -- Senior
Sammi O'Connor pitched a pair of shutouts and also collected four hits and drove in two runs leading Albright to a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Abington on Saturday at the Albright Softball Field.
Albright won the opener 6-0 and completed the sweep with a 4-0 win in game two.
O'Connor was dominant on the mound, as she limited the Nittany Lions to just three hits in the two games and struck out 20 batters. With the two wins, she raised her record to 8-4 on the season.
She also was a combined 4-for-7 at the plate with a run scored and two RBI in the doubleheader.
In game one, O'Connor held Penn State Abington to one hit over 7.0 innings and struck out 12 batters. She allowed only a fourth-inning infield single to Breanna Lineman and then proceeded to retire the next 10 batters in order to end the game.
Albright, which improved to 14-5 on the season with the sweep, struck for a run in the first inning of game one.
Kelly Cembrale led off the inning with a single and came around to score two batters later when O'Connor singled and it got past the left fielder allowing Cembrale to trot in with the first run of the game.
Albright tacked on four runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Brianne Long reached on an error to start the inning and moved to third when O'Connor singled to right centerfield.
Stephanie Pomante followed with a single up the middle that brought home Long and pushed the Lions lead to 2-0.
Regina Milburn then laced a double that plated O'Connor to increase the lead to 3-0 and
Madison Bear then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Pomante making it 4-0 Albright.
Stephany Courtney capped the scoring when she reached base on an error, which allowed Milburn to score and up the margin to 5-0.
The Lions added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning when
Sera Stull, who had doubled to lead off the inning, scored on an RBI single by Long.
O'Connor held Penn State Abington to just two hits, while striking out eight batters in the 4-0 second-game victory.
Albright took the lead in the bottom of the third inning when
Morgan Cullen scored on an RBI single by O'Connor.
The Lions extended the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Cullen led off the inning with a single and advanced to second when Cembrale walked. Long reached on a fielder's choice, which advanced Cullen to third base and she came in to score when O'Connor produced an RBI groundout.
Albright added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when Milburn scored on a passed ball and Courtney scored on a Penn State Abington throwing error.
Albright resumes action on Wednesday (March 30) when it hosts York (Pa.) for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. at the Albright Softball Field.
