Lions Push #14 Stevenson to the Limit on Senior Day

READING, Pa. -- The Albright men's lacrosse team pushed 14th-ranked Stevenson to the limit, but the Mustangs held off a late Lions charge to post a 16-13 MAC Commonwealth victory on Senior Day on Saturday at Shirk Stadium.

The Lions fell behind 4-1 after the first quarter, but climbed to within 11-10 and 13-12 in the fourth quarter, but the Mustangs pulled away from Albright to win the battle for first place in the MAC Commonwealth. Stevenson and Albright both entered the contest with 4-0 records in conference play and Saturday's contest might well be between the two best teams in the conference.

Cam Cetrone and Andrew Potter combined to score nine goals to lead the Lions. Cetrone finished with five goals, while Potter added four goals. Tyler Strayline scored a pair of goals and Derek Stump and James Egleston also had goals for Albright.

Cetrone, Ethan Howell, Nick Jones, Stump and Jordan Zehr had assists for Albright.

Stevenson, which improved to 10-4 overall and 5-0 in league play, was led by Matt Tompkins who had six goals and Kyle D'Onofrio had four goals and two assists.

Albright, which dropped to 5-7 overall and 4-1 in conference play, opened the second quarter with back-to-back goals from Cetrone to cut the deficit to 4-3 with 11:31 to play in the quarter.

Egleston then made an outstanding play to draw the Lions even. He forced a turnover in the Mustangs end and then beat Garrett Egnaczyk to tie the score at 4-4 with 10:30 to play before halftime.

After D'Onofrio and Potter exchanged goals, Stevenson went on a 4-1 run to close the half to take a 9-6 lead at the intermission.

After D'Onofrio gave the Mustangs an 11-7 lead at the 10:47 mark of the third, Albright responded with goals from Stump and Potter to cut the lead to 11-9 after three quarters.

Potter opened the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal to bring the Lions to within 11-10 at the 14:21 mark of the fourth.

Stevenson responded with back-to-back goals to increase the lead to 13-10, but Strayline and Cetrone countered for Albright to cut the lead to 13-12 with 6:45 to play.

The Mustangs then reeled off three straight goals to secure the victory.

Prior to the game, Albright honored its four seniors for their contributions to the lacrosse program. Egleston, Nate Rhoads, Kenny Pastore and Matt Wighard were all honored by head coach Jamie Lockard.

Albright returns to action on Wednesday (April 20) when it visits Widener for a MAC Commonwealth contest beginning at 7 p.m.
