SWARTHMORE, Pa – Goals from a pair of seniors and a clean sheet from a freshman goalkeeper sparked the Albright men's soccer team to its first victory of the 2016 season, a 2-0 win over Rosemont College Sunday evening at Swarthmore College. The win was also the first career victory for Lion head coach Chris Tadley.
Albright got on the scoreboard early in the contest. Senior Josh Linsmeier corralled a loose ball in the box off a corner kick and found the back of the net to put the Lions on top 1-0. The goal was Linsmeier's first of the season.
Both teams had chances through the remainder of the half, but neither club was able to score. Freshman goalkeeper Billy Mullen made a leaping save to keep the Ravens off the board in the 29th minute, one of his five saves in the first half. Rosemont outshot Albright 11-9 in the half, but the Lions held the lead at 1-0.
Albright came out firing in the second half, and took a 2-0 lead five minutes in. Freshman Antonios Araviakis played a nice through ball to sophomore Anthony Parlato, who sent a low cross into the box. Senior Steve Bien-Aime knocked Parlato's cross home for his first goal of the season and Albright's second of the night.
The Lions controlled the pace of play throughout the second half, limiting Rosemont's scoring chances while continuing to pressure the Ravens' defense. Mullen needed to make only one save in the second stanza to record his first career shutout. Albright held a 7-4 shot advantage in the half on the way to the first win of the season.
Albright continues its busy early season schedule on Tuesday, when the Lions travel to Westminster, MD to take on McDaniel College at 4:00.
