ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Albright women's basketball team went into halftime trailing Lebanon Valley, 29-24, at halftime of Saturday's MAC Commonwealth game, but the Lions beat their first-half total with 26 points in the third quarter on the way to a 74-57 victory.
The Lions (10-3, 5-0) took their first lead since it was 2-0 on
Alysha Lofton's three pointer made it 37-35 with 5:36 remaining in the third quarter. Consecutive scores by
Jane Joyce,
Devan Horka and
Nina Mazzarelli later in the period gave Albright 45-37 lead with 1:26 to play in the quarter.
Shannon Thomas pushed the lead to nine points on two separate occasions in the final minute of the quarter as Albright went into the fourth carrying a 50-43 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Lebanon Valley had the Albright lead back down to five points at two points early in the period, but Albright stretched the lead to double digits thanks to a Lofton three-point play and two Thomas free throws. Albright held Lebanon Valley without a field goal for nearly five minutes during the fourth quarter. Albright went on a 10-0 run during that time as the Lions expanded the lead to as many as 21 points.
Thomas led the Lions in scoring with 17 points. Lofton had 16 points and 13 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season, all in her past seven games. She also had four steals and three blocks. Mazzarelli also had 16 points while Joyce chipped in with 14 points and six rebounds.
Albright held Lebanon Valley to 1-for-12 from three-point range while forcing 19 Dutchmen turnovers.
The Lions step out of conference as they travel to face No. 2 Amherst on Monday at 5 p.m.
