WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Albright Lions women's soccer team needed just one goal again to get the job done as they defeated Lycoming 1-0 on the road in MAC Commonwealth play on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, the Lions improve to 7-5-1 on the season with a 2-1-1 record in conference play. Meanwhile, the Warriors drop to 3-9-1 on the season with a 0-4 record in conference play.
The Lions came out on the attack early and often as they registered five shots in the first 16 minutes of the contest. They continued to pepper the net with shots as the period went along, while keeping the majority of the possession in the Warriors zone. Despite outshooting Lycoming 10-4 in the first half, Albright was unable to put any of the shots in the back of the net.
It did not take long for the Lions to score in the second half as junior
Kennedy Lutz tallied her third goal of the season just 57 seconds into the new period. Lutz received a great cross from sophomore
Jillian Lapidus and banged home the shot into an open net after a misplay by a Warrior defender. Lycoming nearly tied the game 10 minutes later on a three good chances within a minute of each other, but junior goalkeeper
Alexis Tunney made two big saves to keep the Lions lead intact. Like the first half, Albright continued to tee off on the Lycoming net but were unable to extend its lead. The Lions defense did not allow a Warrior shot for the final 35 minutes of the game to preserve their second-straight 1-0 win.
The Lions held a wide 23-7 shot advantage after they outshot the Warriors 13-3 in the second half. Albright also held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks as well.
Tunney registered her third-straight shutout after making five saves on seven shots in the full 90 minutes of the contest. Fresh off winning weekly accolades from the MAC Commonwealth and ECAC, she has now matched her shutout number last season with five. Lycoming goalkeeper Madi Welliver suffered the tough-luck loss despite a valiant 13 save effort in the entire 90 minutes.
Albright will return to action on Saturday, October 14
th when they will host Penn State Berks in non-conference play at 3 p.m.
