READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions men's soccer team battled to tie their game against cross-town rival Alvernia in the second half, but gave up a goal with just under seven minutes left to suffer a 2-1 setback on Tuesday night.
With the loss, the Lions fall to 2-12-1 on the season with a 1-4 record in conference play. Meanwhile, the Golden Wolves improve to 7-8-1 on the season with a 2-4 record in conference play.
Alvernia pressed early in the contest as they tallied three shots within two minutes of each other that all went wide of the goal. Lions sophomore goalkeeper
Billy Mullen then turned away a hard shot from the Golden Wolves in the 12
th minute to keep the game scoreless. After two shots from Alvernia that just missed the net in the 23
rd and 25
th minutes, the Golden Wolves finally broke through in the 32
nd minute when Adam Orndorff took the ball on his own to beat Mullen to snap the scoreless tie. Albright gained some steam offensively towards the end of the first half, but were still outshot 10-3 through 45 minutes.
Mullen made a tremendous save in the first four minutes of the second half as he stopped a hard-struck ball off his chest to keep the deficit at one. Junior
Anthony Parlato would then get the equalizer Albright needed in the 59
th minute when he tore through the Golden Wolve defense to beat the Alvernia goalkeeper one-on-one for his sixth goal of the season. The Golden Wolves pressed hard minutes later with three shots on goal that Mullen all turned away. Alvernia then avoided a potential overtime in the 84
th minute when Ryan Kuster broke the tie with a goal on a one-timer after receiving the ball from the right side. The Lions had a chance to answer back with two good chances just minutes after, but ultimately fell short.
The Golden Wolves finished with a 22-8 shot advantage after out-shooting the Lions 12-5 in the second half. Alvernia also held a slight 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Mullen suffered the loss despite a valiant effort in net after making eight saves and allowing two goals in the full 90 minutes. Golden Wolves goalkeeper Zach Rider tallied the win after making four saves and allowing one goal in the entire 90 minutes of play.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, October 21
st when they will host Hood in MAC Commonwealth play at 2 p.m.
