READING, Pa. – Senior
Morgan Valera broke a scoreless tie in the 18
th minute as the Albright Lions women's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over cross-town rival Alvernia on Wednesday night in MAC Commonwealth play.
With the win, the Lions improve to 9-5-1 on the season with a 3-1-1 record in MAC Commonwealth play. Albright has now won four straight 1-0 contests and has shutout their opponent in five straight games. Meanwhile, the Golden Wolves fall to 5-9-1 on the season with a 2-4 record in conference play.
Albright controlled play early in the contest as they registered the first five shots of the game. Valera helped the Lions break through on the fifth shot of the game as she scored her first goal of the season off a pass from sophomore
Jillian Lapidus to bring the score to 1-0. The Lions had a few more scoring opportunities in the first half to extend the lead, but were unable to convert on any of them. Albright held an 8-2 shot advantage in the first half.
The Lions picked right where they left off when the second half started as senior
Crissy Terraces had a chance in the first minute of play that was saved by the Golden Wolve goalkeeper. Alvernia registered their only shot on goal in the contest in the 60
th minute that was saved by junior
Alexis Tunney. Terraces then tallied three shots within five minutes of each other to keep chances rolling for the Lions as they closed out the win with dominant possession control.
Albright held a 16-6 shot advantage for the game, and limited the Golden Wolves to just one shot on goal. The Lions also held a slight 6-2 corner kick advantage as well.
Tunney registered her fourth-straight shutout win after making one save in the full 90 minutes of play. After winning her second straight MAC Commonwealth Defensive Player of the Week award, she now has a career-best six shutouts in a single season. Alvernia goalkeeper Jessica Plunkett earned the tough-luck loss after making five saves and allowing one goal in a solid effort.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday, October 21
st when they will host Hood in MAC Commonwealth play at 5 p.m.
