READING, Pa. – The Albright volleyball team honored its three seniors prior to the team's final home match of the season on Tuesday night against Messiah at Bollman Center, but the Falcons spoiled the party with a straight-set victory over the Lions. Messiah won the match 25-15, 25-16 and 25-14.
Messiah (14-14, 5-2) had a strong offensive performance, hitting .299 for the match and improving upon that percentage in each successive set.
In the first set, Messiah led 6-1 and 11-3 before kills by
Morgan Puller and
Bryana Chambers sparked a run that helped the Lions climb back into the set. Down 14-5, Albright scored five straight points thanks to kills by
Paige Westra and
Kellie Hill along with an ace by
Claudia Guise to make it 14-10. Messiah turned that into a 20-12 lead, however, as it finished the set with a 25-15 win.
Messiah scored the first five points of the second set and pushed its lead into double digits thanks to another 5-0 run to make it 15-5. Chambers added another kills to spark a 3-0 run to make it 15-8, and
Becca Davis followed with an ace later to make it 17-10.
Kellie Hill scored on a four-point run for the Lions to help close the gap to 21-14, but again Messiah finished the set before the Lions could come any closer.
Westra and Hill opened the third set with kills to give Albright the early 2-0 lead, but Messiah responded with seven of the next eight points to assume the lead. Albright had its best hitting set of the match in the third, but so did Messiah. The Falcons hit .394 in the set as they took the final set, 25-14.
Albright (3-19, 0-7) honored seniors
Naliah Beckford, Hill and Guise before the match. Hill finished with nine kills. Guise had 15 assists and six digs while Beckford had an assist and a dig.
Albright finishes its season on Thursday night at crosstown rival Alvernia at 7 p.m.
