READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie against Widener in MAC Commonwealth play on Senior Night at Shirk Stadium.
With the tie, the Lions record stands at 2-13-2 with a 1-5-1 record in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Pride record now sits at 3-7-5 with a 0-4-3 record in conference play. This is the Lions first tie since their 1-1 draw against Mount Aloysius in early September.
Both offenses started slow on the chilly evening with just a combined three shots in the first 20 minutes of play. Lions sophomore goalkeeper
Billy Mullen would make a good save on a hard shot in the 21
st minute to keep the game scoreless. After another big save from Mullen in the 41
st minute, the Lions nearly got on the board when junior Antony Parlato ripped a shot that was deflected away by the Pride goalkeeper in the 44
th minute. The ball then rolled to sophomore
Eric Adamo, who had his shot turned away at the outside corner of the net. The Pride held a 7-4 shot advantage after one half.
After two quick chances from the Pride to open the second half, the Lions finally broke through in the 53
rd minute when Parlato struck a shot from 15 yards out into the top right corner of the net for his seventh goal of the season. Sophomore
Antonios Araviakis led a Lions 3-on-2 charge down the field and got the ball to Parlato to score. Albright seemed to take full control of the game in the 58
th minute after Shea Morgan received a red card for two yellow cards within four minutes of each other. However, the Pride began to control possession of the game despite being down a player. Widener began creating chance after chance which led to Zach Jankauskas tying the game at one in the 79
th minute of the game. A Lions turnover led to Jankauskas breaking through the Lions defense and poking the ball over Mullen, who charged out of net trying for a slide tackle.
Despite being down a player for the majority of the second half, the Pride held an 8-3 shot advantage in the second half. Both teams each just tallied one shot in the first overtime period which forced a second overtime. Parlato had two huge chances to start the second overtime that nearly won the Lions the game. He got behind the defense and poked the ball over the goalkeeper in the 101
st minute, but it rolled slowly just wide of the net. His next shot in the 104
th minute hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced away from the net. Mullen turned away one last Pride chance in the 107
th minute on a breakaway to preserve the 1-1 tie.
The Pride held an 18-11 shot advantage for the game and each team had one corner kick. Mullen made eight saves and allowed one goal in the full 110 minutes, while Pride goalkeeper Danny Thompson made five saves and allowed one goal in entire 110 minutes.
