READING, Pa. - Devon Mela and
Kelly Baumann led the charge as Albright notched a win in its season opener over Misericordia, 14-11.
Misericordia got off to a quick start as it scored two straight goals early. Not long after, Corrine Donohue scored her first goal of the year to chip into the lead. Misericordia added another goal before Albright went on a four-goal streak to give itself a 5-3 lead midway through the first half.
The Cougars were able to go on a three-goal streak before
Mariah Cullen and Donohue each scored their second goals of the game to give Albright a 7-6 lead. After surrendering two more goals to the Cougars, Albright ended the first half on a 4-0 run led by Baumann, Mela and
Patricia Horgan to take an 11-8 lead into the half.
The Cougars scored a minute into the second half to pull the score within two. Not long after, Baumann and Mela scored back-to-back goals to make 13-9 Albright. Later in the second half, Misericordia pulled to within two again, but that's the closest it would come as Mela scored the final goal of the game with 14:21 left in the second half, sending Albright home on a winning note.
Albright rattled off 32 shots to Misericordia's 25. Albright had 26 shots on goal while Misericordia had 20. The Lions forced 21 turnovers while picking up 25 ground balls.
Mela scored four goals while Baumann netted three. Donohue and Cullen each scored two goals while Horgan,
Sophie Bass and
Jacqui Montague each had one goal.
Hayley Joyce made nine saves on the afternoon.
The Lions travel to Collegeville to take on Ursinus on Saturday. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
