Baseball Starts Season With Extra Innings Contest

FLEMINGTON, N.J. – The Albright baseball team opened the 2017 campaign with a neutral-site doubleheader against Scranton on Saturday afternoon. The Lions lost 5-3 in game one before dropping the second game, 3-2, in 10 innings.

Game One
Albright and Scranton combined for seven of the game's eight runs in the third inning. Scranton scored four runs in the top of the frame, thanks to a pair of doubles and a sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the third, the Lions quickly had two men out before rallying to score three runs of their own. Nathan Fretz tripled to left and scored on Jimmie Gentry's single to center to make it 4-1. After a Jeff Yordy single moved Gentry to second, he came around to score on Noah Beebe base hit to cut the lead to 4-2. Tanner Brescancine capped the three-run, five-hit inning with an RBI single to left.

Albright had two men on base in the bottom of the fourth while trailing, 4-3, thanks to an error and a walk, but a fielder's choice and a fly out to end the inning stopped the threat. Scranton added an insurance run in the sixth inning after two outs.

Fretz and Yordy each had two hits in game one. Connor Travis went four innings for the Lions, allowing four runs on just three hits. Trevor Mastria came in for three innings of relief and allowed a run on four hits.

Game Two
Albright served as the visiting team for game two, and the Lions fell behind due to an unearned run in the bottom of the first. The lone hit of the frame was the double to center to score the man who reached via error.

Albright came back to tie the score in the top of the third. Jesse Fikslin singled after one out, and Austin Roth doubled him home with the next at-bat.

The Lions took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. Brescancine led off with a walk, and he moved to second on Micah Storms' single. Brescancine advanced to third on a fly out for the first out of the inning, and he finished his station-to-station trip by scoring on an error.

Scranton quickly tied it in the bottom of the fourth. A double and two productive outs produced a run for a 2-2 score. The game stayed tied through its intended seven innings. In the top of the eighth, the Lions put their first two runners on base. Storms led off with a walk and advanced all the way to third on two wild pitches. Tyler Keller walked, and Logan Pennypacker pinch ran and stole second. With runners on second and third and nobody out, Albright failed to capitalize thanks to a strike out, pop out and ground out.

In the bottom of the frame, the Lions flashed some leather to keep the game alive. With the potential winning run at second, Gentry made a diving stop at third and threw on to first to get the batter. With two outs and that potential winning run now at third, Yordy corralled a ball that deflected off the pitcher and threw the hitter out at first to end the inning.

Scranton finally ended the game in the 10th. A leadoff walk and an error led to a bases loaded situation with nobody out. After a foul out, a base hit to center chased home the winning run.

Albright pitching scattered just three hits through nine-plus innings of work in game two. Starter Matt Fisher earned a no-decision after going 5.1 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits while striking out four. The Albright bullpen didn't allow a hit until the game-winner in the 10th inning.

Albright returns to action at Muhlenberg on Wednesday.
