Dominant Second Half Leads Women’s Hoops Past Alvernia

READING, Pa. – The Albright women's basketball team trailed, 27-23, with 4:30 to play in the first half of its game at Alvernia on Wednesday night. That deficit didn't last. Albright finished the game on a 49-12 run that included Alvernia scoring just 10 points in the second half. The Lions won the game, 72-39, to stay perfect in MAC Commonwealth play.

The Lions (19-4, 14-0) scored the final six points of the first half to take a 33-29 into the intermission. The lead just expanded from there. Those six points at the end of the first half started a 43-3 run for the Lions that extended deep into the fourth quarter to make the score 70-32. By the time Kiersten Ingram hit a three pointer with 3:10 to play in the game, Albright had held Alvernia without a field goal for 21:20. That basket for Alvernia cut into the Lions' largest lead of the night at 38 points.

Nina Mazzarelli led Albright with 31 points. She also had seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Alysha Lofton and Jane Joyce each scored 10 points. Lofton pulled down 12 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season. Eight of her 12 rebounds were on the offensive glass. She also had four steals and three assists. Joyce had five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Albright forced 25 turnovers and scored 31 points off those turnovers. The Lions also outscored Alvernia, 32-0, in the paint. The Lions had runs of 12-0, 14-0 and 17-0 in the game. It's the second time this season Albright held its opponent to less than 40 points.

Shannon Thomas and MiKayla Lea each scored seven points. Thomas had seven rebounds, and Lea had six.

Albright stays on the road to face Lycoming on Saturday at 1 p.m.
