Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Late Goal Beats Women’s Lacrosse at McDaniel, 11-10

WESTMINSTER, Md. – A back-and-forth affair between the Albright women's lacrosse team and McDaniel on Saturday afternoon went McDaniel's way thanks to a goal with less than three minutes to play in the second half to give the Green Terror an 11-10 victory over the Lions. Sophie Bass scored a career-high five goals while adding an assist.

After falling behind, 2-0, in the first 36 seconds of the game, Albright responded with five consecutive goals over the next 13 minutes. Bass and Mariah Cullen each had two goals while Devon Mela scored the other. Cullen got the Lions on the board just 1:01 after the second McDaniel goal, and Bass followed with her first of the game just 24 seconds later.

The pair combined for Albright's third goal with Bass assisting on Cullen's score with 24:15 left in the first half. Mela made it 4-2 at 17:42, and Bass rounded out the 5-0 streak with her second goal at 15:29.

McDaniel scored two straight to cut the Lions' lead to 5-4, but Mela scored her second goal of the game at 8:57 to give the Lions a two-goal lead. After another McDaniel goal, Albright closed the first half with Cullen returning the favor with an assist on Bass's third goal with 1:45 left. That sent Albright into the intermission with a 7-5 lead.

Bass made it 8-5 with her fourth goal, assisted by Kelly Baumann less than two minutes into the second half. That's when McDaniel took its turn with a run. The Green Terror scored the next four goals in a span of just more than six minutes to lead, 9-8.

Corinne Donohue broke the run with a goal to tie the score at 9-9 with 19:44 to play. McDaniel again scored to retake the lead, but Bass countered with her fifth goal with 10:51 to play to make it 10-10. The score stayed there for more than eight minutes. During that time, Albright goalie Hayley Joyce made two of her seven saves. McDaniel finally broke through with the game-winner with 2:41 to play. Cullen had a shot hit the post and Mela was stopped on a free position shot as the Lions looked for the equalizer.

Patricia Horgan led the team with three ground balls. Mela led the way with three draw controls.

The Lions head to Hilton Head, S.C., for a pair of games next week. Washington College is first on Tuesday at 11 a.m.
