Messiah Tops Softball in Doubleheader

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Albright softball team opened MAC Commonwealth play at Messiah on Wednesday afternoon, but the Falcons swept the doubleheader with the Lions by the scores of 3-0 and 8-0.

Riley Grenda pitched well in game one, limiting the Falcons to six hits over her six innings without walking a batter. Grenda nearly got out of the first two innings that Messiah scored. The Falcons managed to score runs in the third and fifth innings after two outs.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the sixth, the Lions tried to muster some two-out lightning of their own. Jordan Chell and Brianne Long singled after the first two hitters were put out, but a ground out back to the pitcher ended the Albright threat.

Messiah added an insurance run on a one-out homer in the bottom of the sixth. Camille Sears and Stephany Courtney had Albright's other two hits in game one.

Messiah (15-3) used big innings early in game two to put out of reach. The Falcons scored two of its three runs in the first inning after two outs.

Trailing 3-0, Albright put its first two runners on base in the top of the second. Armida Roman led off the inning with a single up the middle, and Sears followed with a single to right. Courtney reached on a fielder's choice for the second out to move Roman to third, but the inning ended on a fly out to left field.

Messiah put the game out of reach in the second, scoring five more runs to add to its lead. The Falcons got those five runs on five hits and two Albright errors. With the score 8-0, the mercy rule went into effect, ending the game after five innings.

Albright returns home tomorrow for a non-conference doubleheader against Lancaster Bible at 3 p.m.
