ASTON, Pa. – The Albright softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Neumann on Monday afternoon. The Lions lost, 8-0 in game one before coming back to take the second game, 8-2.
In game two, Neumann jumped ahead with two runs in the bottom of the first, but the Albright offense responded in the top of the second.
Camille Sears and
Armida Roman led off with singles. Sears came home to score on
Kelly Cembrale's RBI groundout to cut the deficit in half.
Albright pushed ahead with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Stephany Courtney led off the inning by reaching on an error, and she later scored on
Brianne Long's sacrifice fly. Sears singled, Cembrale walked and
Zoe Robertson singled to load the bases.
Alyssa Medina followed with a walk to score Sears. That gave Albright its first lead, 3-2.
Abigail Lord led off the top of the fifth inning with a single, and she moved to third thanks to two wild pitches. That immediately paid off in a run when Courtney lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Lord for a 4-2 Albright advantage. Roman started a two-out rally with a single to right center. After a walk to Long, Cembrale and Robertson each reached on infield singles. Roman scored on Robertson's hit to make it 5-2.
Albright scored three runs after two outs in the sixth inning to ice the game. Courtney started the rally with a double. She scored on Sears' single to expand the lead to 6-2. Roman followed with a double to score Sears.
Jessica Rodriguez, pinch running for Roman, scored on an error to make it 8-2.
Sears and Roman each had three hits to pace the Albright offense. Robertson was 2-for-4 with an RBI. In the circle,
Riley Gerenda settled down after allowing those two first-inning runs to hold Neumann scoreless for the rest of the game. She struck out five in her seven innings.
In game one, Courtney led the Albright offense with two hits, including a double. Sears also doubled for the Lions, but Neumann scored three runs in the first and three more in the third to put the game out of reach on its way to an 8-0 win.
Albright stays out of conference when it travels to King's (Pa.) for a Wednesday doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
