READING, Pa. – The Albright women's lacrosse team dominated from the opening whistle as the Lions went on to defeat cross-town conference opponent Alvernia 14-3 Saturday afternoon.
Albright opened the regular season finale scoring 11 unanswered goals as it blew past its opponent.
Devon Mela won the opening draw control before scoring the first goal of the game only 13 seconds into the match. After
Kelly Baumann made it a 2-0 game, Mela scored a free position shot for her second goal of the game. Alvernia called a timeout 6:26 into the first half after
Sophie Bass' shot found the back of the net to hand the Lions a four-goal lead.
The timeout, however, did not slow down the Lions as they went on to score seven goals before the first half ended. Albright scored three goals in 2:39 to take a commanding seven-goal lead thanks to two
Mariah Cullen goals and an
Erin Coleman goal. Five minutes passed by before
Patricia Horgan netted a goal of her own to extend the lead to 8-0. Mela notched back-to-back goals, and Bass scored her second goal of the match to round out Albright's first half scoring. Alvernia scored its first goal of the game with less than a minute to play, but Albright entered halftime up 11-1.
The Lions did not take their foot off the gas pedal in the second half. Corrine Donohue scored Albright's 12th goal of the match only 46 seconds in. With a man advantage, Cullen recorded a hat trick with 27:25 left on the clock as the senior extended Albright's lead to 13-1. Baumann scored the Lions final goal of the game with just over 16 minutes remaining in the half to seal an Albright victory.
Mela led the team with four goals, and Cullen finished with three. Bass and Baumann each added a pair, while Coleman, Donohue, and Horgan tallied one.
Hayley Joyce made eight saves to earn the victory.
Albright outshot its opponent 29 to 18 with 20 of those shots being on net. The Lions also held a 14-5 edge in draw controls.
Albright continues its season on Wednesday, May 3, as it competes in the MAC Commonwealth Championship. The Lions, who are the third seed, travel to no. 2 Stevenson for a semifinal match-up. The time for the semifinal match will be announced at a later date.
