READING, Pa. – Playing in their second game in two days, the Albright Lions Men's Soccer team dropped another one goal game, this time to Virginia Wesleyan by a 2-1 score on Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Lions fall to 1-5-1 on the season and have lost three games in a row by one goal. Meanwhile, the Marlins of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) improve to 5-1.
Albright would strike first in the sixth minute when junior
Anthony Parlato scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season after he beat a defender one on one and launched the ball past the goalie. Parlato has now scored in two straight games. The Lions and Marlins would trade chances throughout the first half, but the score would stay the same going into halftime. Virginia Wesleyan held a slight 7-6 shot advantage.
In the second half, the Marlins immediately re-applied the offensive pressure early which led to early chances. The Lions did everything they could to keep the Marlins off the board until the 69
th minute when Kevin Prophet scored his first goal of the season for Virginia Wesleyan after he drew out Lion goalkeeper
Billy Mullen and shot the ball from 15 yards out just before Mullen could break up the play. The Marlins would then add the game winner in the 85
th minute from Andrew Deunke after receiving a pass from the right side.
Virginia Wesleyan held a 19-9 shot advantage after out-shooting the Lions 12-3 in the second half. The Marlins also held a slight 8-4 advantage in corner kicks as well.
Mullen suffered the loss despite a valiant effort in net after making 11 saves in 90 minutes. Marlin goalkeeper Nick Peterson registered the win after making two saves in the full 90 minutes.
The Lions will conclude their four-game homestand on Wednesday, Sept. 20 when they will face No. 6 Rutgers-Newark for a 7 p.m. contest.
