DOVER, De. – Behind two second half goals in two straight minutes, the Albright Lions field hockey team picked up a 2-0 non-conference win on the road against Wesley on Monday night.
With the win, the Lions improve to 2-3 on the season, while the Wolverines fall to 1-5. This was the second straight opponent Albright has faced from the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC).
The Lions came out flying on the road as they created a number of scoring chances early on in the first half. The majority of the play was spent in the Wolverines zone, but Albright could not find the back of the net despite the offensive pressure. The game went deadlocked at zero heading into the halftime with the Lions holding a 12-1 shot advantage.
In the second half, Albright continued to control play as the shots continued to pile up. Then the Lions would finally strike in the 55
th minute when freshman
Bailey Lehman scored the first goal of her collegiate career after a penalty corner taken by senior
Kasey Neiderer. It only took just over a minute before Albright scored again on a breakaway from junior
Annette Helmandollar. For Helmandollar, it was her second straight game with a goal. The Lions continued to pressure for more, but would settle for the 2-0 victory.
Albright held a staggering 30-2 shot advantage after outshooting the Wolverines 18-1 in the second half. The Lions also held a 25-1 advantage in penalty corners as well.
Junior goalkeeper
Aileen Taylor earned her second shutout in a week after not needing to make any saves in the full 70 minutes of play. Wesley goalkeeper Sidney Knott suffered the loss after making 10 saves and allowing both goals in 57:11 minutes of play.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday, September 23rd when they will host Stevenson at 5:30 p.m. as MAC Commonwealth play gets underway.
