READING, Pa. – The Albright women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss to Susquehanna on Sunday afternoon after the River Hawks scored on a free kick with 16 seconds left in the game to earn a 1-0 win.
With the loss, the Lions drop to 1-1 through their first two non-conference games of the season. Meanwhile, the River Hawks improve to 2-0 as they have now defeated two MAC Commonwealth opponents to open the season.
Both teams traded some good early offensive chances in the first half including a shot from Albright senior
Madison Balga that was just tipped over the net by River Hawk goalie Julia Tolin. Susquehanna would go on to hold a slight 4-3 shot advantage in the first half.
The Lions would survive some early chances from the River Hawks in the second half to keep the game scoreless and seemed to be headed for overtime before being whistled for a foul in the top of the box in the final minute. Susquehanna's leading scorer from a year ago, Emily Sullivan, would then drive the free kick into the net to break the scoreless tie and earn the win for the River Hawks.
Both teams each tallied seven shots in the contest with the River Hawks holding a 4-3 shot on net advantage. The Lions held a sizable 6-1 corner kick advantage after having five in the first half.
Junior
Alexis Tunney suffered a tough loss for the lions after making three saves in all 90 minutes of action. Tolin would earn the win in net for the River Hawks after making three saves in the full 90 minutes.
Albright will return to play on Wednesday, September 6
th, when they will travel to face DeSales for a 4 p.m. contest.
