CHESTER, Pa. – The Albright Lions field hockey team did everything they could to try and rally from a two-goal deficit against Widener on Saturday afternoon, but ultimately fell 2-1 to the Pride in MAC Commonwealth play.
With the loss, the Lions record drops to 4-4 overall with a 1-1 record in conference play. Meanwhile, the Pride improves to 7-2 overall with a 2-0 record in conference play.
Widener came out firing in the first half by registering three shots in the initial 10 minutes of play. The Pride would cash in on their fourth shot of the half with a goal that deflected off Lions goalkeeper
Aileen Taylor to grab a 1-0 lead in the 11
th minute of play. After an Albright timeout in the 16
th minute, the Pride would score eight minutes later off a backhander in the circle to make it 2-0. Widener outshot the Lions 8-1 in the first half, and held a 4-1 advantage in penalty corners.
The Lions then came alive in the second half by holding play in the Pride zone to create scoring chances. Albright would get on the board in the 55
th minute on a goal from senior
Kasey Neiderer to cut the Widener lead to 2-1. Neiderer scored on a deflection off the keeper after a pass from freshman
Bailey Lehman. That was her first goal of the season for the Lions. Albright mounted one last surge, but could not get the equalizer despite receiving four penalty corners in the last 15 minutes of play.
The Pride held an 11-4 shot advantage for the game, and a narrow 7-6 advantage in penalty corners. Both teams each tallied three shots in the second half.
Taylor suffered the loss for the Lions after making four saves and allowing two goals in the full 70 minutes. Widener goalkeeper Sabrina Roberto earned the win after tallying one save and allowing one goal in the entire 70 minutes of play.
Albright will return to action on Tuesday, October 3
rd when they will travel to face Scranton for a 7 p.m. non-conference contest.
